"I Don't Recall Ever Having to Work This Hard": Voices of University Council for Educational Administration Program Coordinators During the Pandemic

Abstract

Drawing upon theories of role conflict, role ambiguity, and role commitment, we interviewed 20 program coordinators at University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) member institutions in order to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has shaped their work and responsibilities. Participants reported increased demands and challenges during the pandemic. These included transitioning face-to-face programs to online delivery, supporting faculty in the transition, recruiting students, supporting stressed out student-practitioners, facilitating leadership practica after P-12 schools transitioned to online instruction, and cooperating with state licensing bodies to determine how practica could be modified due to the pandemic. We offer implications for policy and practice, including formalizing its role via contracts and agreed-upon job responsibilities, as well as providing adequate incentives.
