Can Interactivity and Gamification Help Reduce Achievement Gaps for Underserved Learners in Science

Abstract

Interactivity and gamification elements added to assessments, especially low-stakes assessments, can potentially increases student engagement and performance. In this study, we examine how gamification and interactivity might help traditionally underserved groups in science BIPOC and female students to improve engagement and performance. Two separate data collection phases, one before Covid-19 shutdowns of March 2020 and one during the fall of 2022 are analyzed to how these facets can help reduce achievement gaps. Also, engagement and interest are compared from before and after the Covid disruptions of school in spring of 2020.
