The Roles of Distance and Time in Principal Job-to-Job Transfers

Abstract

While a growing body of literature has emphasized conditions surrounding principal turnover, less attention has been paid to how withing-career sorting has shaped the principal labor market. Utilizing administrative Texas over 20 years, we calculate the driving distance and time for every principal transfer event in the state. Descriptive and regression results of the study add a new dimension to our understanding of the within-career transfer function of principals, pointing to a spatially segmented market by sex and race and bound by both labor market and locale.
