Abstract

This paper introduces an immersive and intelligent virtual reality (VR) enabled training system (i2VRTS) that provides lab training for college engineering students. The i2VRTS was carefully designed with advanced technologies and sound instructional principles, and provides a real lab environment for micro-fabrication training, featuring an intelligent instructional system. Eighteen students participated in a pilot study and their lab performances and i2VRTS experiences were examined through pre- and post-surveys, in-VR monitoring system, in-lab test, and post-hoc interviews. We analyzed and assessed their virtual experiences in three main directions – effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. Positive results were archived, part of which are reported and discussed in this paper because of the word limit. More content is expected to be shared at the conference.
