A 20-Year Systematic Review of Before- and After-School Physical Activity Research (2000–2020)

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of literature on organized before and after-school programs (B&ASPs) that focus on physical activity (PA) and/or sport from 2000 to 2020. Methods: Five databases were searched (Web of Science, ERIC, Educ Research Complete, APA Psych Info, and Sport Discus) which produced 2,571 articles; 291 articles fit inclusion criteria. Articles were coded independently and analyzed with SPSS. Results: Articles, in general, increased by year of publication, were mostly quantitative (n=199) and were mostly from the USA (n=211). Research was published in 152 journals across 26 countries. Conclusion: B&ASP research is rapidly growing but lacks a focused journal, and a critical lens.
