A Preliminary Analysis of Third Space–Oriented Technology-Based Learning: Two Cases

Abstract

Research calls for diversity of methodological approaches to examine the nuanced dynamics and complexities of learning and development, scaffolded through emerging learning technologies. However, limited studies have addressed sociocultural dimensions. To address this research gap, we consider the theoretical construct of third space as a valuable approach to illuminate the openness and possibility of connecting and navigating the awareness of space and spatiality to epistemological development situated in technology-based learning spaces to promote social justice. Therefore, in this preliminary analysis, we conceptualize the rise, operation, and demise of the metaphorized third space through two cases to discuss how multilingual learners develop writing using virtual reality tools and how they apply mathematics and computer programming in designing digital videos.
