Abstract

Despite the need for culturally-responsive and anti-racist computing, CS teacher preparation programs (TPPs) seem slow to adopt equity focused practices. We research CS TPPs across the U.S. to determine the extent to which they integrate justice work. Using the framework of equity pedagogies, we found most programs did not indicate a focus on equity, and those that did varied in their commitments. Based on our study, we contend most teacher ed programs do not prepare teachers to use equity pedagogies in their classrooms. We challenge teacher education programs to work toward a full socio-cultural consciousness of power, develop an awareness of historic and current oppression in education and in CS, and practice pedagogies which connect and teach toward justice.
