Abstract

Although Black women are essential pieces of the literary canon, many students graduate high school never having been exposed to these knowledge producers. The active suppression of Black women in educational spaces aligns with the notion that Black women are seen as political dangers (Smith, 2020), able to wield weapons of knowledge to disrupt the very systems looking to confine them. I explore the connections between curriculum, hip-hop pedagogy, and Black women and ask: In what ways can Black women in hip-hop be used to challenge students critically while pushing toward transformative pedagogy? This paper seeks to highlight how Black women have created and designed pedagogical practices that are student centered through my conceptualization of the Cypher Cs.
