Abstract

This presentation is based on the research involved with writing the Oxford University Press Bibliography of the History of Early Childhood Education in the United States. The bibliography interrogates the history of ECE chronologically to establish the truth of what informs how young children are supported in contemporary society. The bibliography highlights the research underpinning young children’s learning and experiences, exploring appropriate pedagogy and curriculum for all children and their families. The literature annotations for the chronological time frames support a more “truthful” view of what has transpired and common misconceptions, highlighting underrepresentation, misinterpretation and decontextualized issues in a broader, societal and public forum. The bibliography provides research and evidence of historical approaches to young children’s learning.
