"The Most Me": Community Cultural Wealth for Place-Based Financial Literacy Learning

Abstract

This presentation considers a place-based economics and financial literacy education (FLE) designed through the community cultural wealth model. The critical participatory action research design sought to engage youth participants in place-based community literacy practices to connect financial literacy to personal, family, community, and generational wealth beyond financial income alone. Throughout the identified community literacy practices, youth communicated complex understandings of community cultural wealth tied to the place-based component of the learning environment in two ways: (a) spatial history as navigational wealth and (b) place-based as a familia resource for past, present, and future identity development. Adding to existing literature on culturally responsive FLE, this study further explores how place-based FLE connects community histories, wealth, and literacies.
