Abstract

Curricular responses are necessary to address environmental issues in the Anthropocene. Competencies learned through environmental sustainability education (ESE) curriculum will enable youth in PK-12 school contexts to address our current socio-ecological challenges. One curricular approach involve activities nested in school communities. School-based implementation for this curricular innovation is challenged by curriculum making that ignores the local socio-ecological context of practices. This presentation will introduce a theory of practice architectures and describe the analyses of two school sites implementing ESE curriculum. This methodological approach is a novel way of acknowledging social-dialectical practices by unraveling curriculum practices. Implications for this approach brings value to researchers and practitioners as they identify systemic connections that affect ESE implementation in a school's socio-ecological place.
