Online Teaching Tools: Effects on Students' Perceptions of the Environment and Efficacy for Online Learning

Abstract

As the number of online classes increases, understanding student perceptions of the tools used, learning environment, and their efficacy for online learning is growing more essential for effective course design necessary. Participants (N=106) were undergraduates recruited during the Spring 2022 semester, with data collected via an online survey. Taking a mixed methods approach to data analysis, results include frequencies for specific online tools used, students’ perceptions of the usefulness of these tools, and how frequency of use for certain tools impacts perceptions of the learning environment and self-regulation/self-efficacy in online learning contexts. Based on these results, instructors might consider being more explicit about each tool’s utility in order to create meaningful online learning experiences.
