Specific Out-of-School Time Science Experiences/Interest and STEM Career Expectations

Abstract

This study explores the association of in-school and OST science experiences in grades 3-12 on STEM career interest using logistic regression analyses. The data set included more than 6,527 youth participants across a wide array of demographic differences. The results show that hands-on science activities in school and attended a science camp/program is strongly associated with STEM career expectations. A following logistic regression model further shows that students who reported experience/interest in a variety of specific OST science activities in grades 3-12 were more likely than those without these informal science experiences/interest to have an expected career in STEM career. The study adds support to policymakers and organizations seeking to increase the availability of informal science opportunities for young children.
