Abstract

As higher education institutions diversify, faculty need opportunities to transform their practices to ensure inclusive classroom spaces. Yet, numerous faculty report receiving minimal guidance to improve their teaching. Hence, this paper details the Inclusive Pedagogies Observation Protocol (IPOP) developed at a small private liberal arts college in the western United States. Inspired by promising K-12 classroom professional development practices, the IPOP encourages culturally responsive pedagogies and universal design for learning in higher education classrooms. The IPOP features five areas of pedagogical foci: Inclusive Classroom Environment, Instructional Practices, Assessment, Critical Consciousness, and Discourse. In this paper, I share the process of IPOP development, an overview of the finalized instrument, and its recommended uses for faculty professional development.
