Public Pedagogy and Global Citizenship: Case Studies in Global Concerts

Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Superior A

Abstract

Charity concerts have become a mainstay in efforts to educate broad audiences about global civic issues since 1970. We explore the pedagogy of such events, analyzing the methods used to educate for global citizenship and audience responses. We offer insights about how concerts promote affective learning about global issues. These concerts aim to put pressure on world leaders to respond to a variety of issues, while compelling global civic behaviors from attendees. We found many attendees valued being among people they perceived to hold similar values and ideologies. However, our interviews did not reflect the sense that attendees felt they were in an exclusive community that earned their way into a concert or that they were committed to being citizen-actors.
