Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The investigation of financial literacy in higher education is not a new phenomenon; however, few inquiries investigate how financial literacy can shape students' behavior while enrolled at their higher education institution. This exploratory study investigates how students' knowledge of their institution and previous experiences shape their financial literacy— and the influence of financial literacy on students' involvement in mandatory fee-supported services. These fees support resources and programs that help students retain and matriculate at universities and colleges. Previous fee studies have found that knowledge and attitudes towards mandatory fees and academic capital predict students' engagement in fee-supported services. The findings of the analysis suggest that financial literacy can shape students' involvement in services and programs supported by compulsory fee revenue.
