Abstract

Humanizing higher education requires increased attention to undergraduate students’ mental health. A multi-examination of mental health policies/practices among U.S. higher education institutions, and state and federal governments revealed how policies affect students’ accessing mental health support/services. Institutions of higher education must be holistic in how they provide adequate health and wellness services for students given that there are students on campus who self-diagnose and students who do not identify their mental health diagnosis as a disability. Even when students may not necessarily identify their mental health diagnosis as a disability, institutions of higher education still need to provide adequate accommodation for the health and wellness of students. In this roundtable, we propose increased investment in mental health services through public policy.
