Successful geoscience reasoning involves sensemaking about both spatial and timescales. Existing literature recognizes challenges embedded within each scale, but often examines them separately. We collected qualitative data from undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory geology course during a single-day field trip. Using narrative analysis, we document cases in which students encounter a fundamental challenge--observing features that are spatially adjacent, but chronologically distant. The results move the literature forward by articulating a nuanced challenge at the nexus of spatial and temporal scale reasoning. Future work may benefit from scaffolds that support students in highlighting spatially adjacent, but chronologically distant features to develop a deeper understanding of geological processes.
