Cultural Considerations for Vocabulary Instruction in the Urban Classroom

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

In Cultural Considerations for Vocabulary Instruction in the Urban Classroom, the presenter challenges attendees with the task of being reflective and intentional in their use of instructional materials and teaching practices in the literacy classroom. Using storytelling, the presenter craftily illustrates how her years spent teaching in the elementary classroom enabled her to thrive in her scholarship as a researcher and teacher educator. Perhaps you will laugh. You may even shed a tear. Ultimately, the presenter charges attendees with defying the deficit thinking that accompanies literacy instruction for urban student populations and challenges them to leverage community funds of knowledge as the literacy wealth they have always been.
