Abstract

While the transformative paradigm plays a unique role in the generation of social change-driven mixed methods research, current scholarly literature often conflates this paradigm with similar orientations. This article overviews key differences between the transformative paradigm and three other commonly confused paradigms: critical constructivism, post-positivism, and pragmatism. By explaining differences between these paradigms alongside examples from the scholarly literature that emphasize the dangers of conflating them, I demonstrate why future mixed methods researchers should distinguish the transformative paradigm in their research and extend its reach beyond the current fields where the paradigm currently lives. This article aims to provide clarity that can help mixed methods researchers collaborate and advance social justice-driven knowledge beyond academic disciplinary boundaries.
