As the United States population becomes more diverse, the need for culturally competent physicians grows in the United States. Thus, a closer examination of the Latinx students is needed to understand medical school aspirations, motivations and persistence of Latinx students. This study uses asset-based and critical frameworks to understand from Latinx students perspectives on their aspirations in pursuing medicine. Findings are presented in a new conceptual model which centers the lived experiences of Latinx students. Recommendations are provided to advance educational research by refocusing on Latinx students in order to study persistence in medicine.
