Poststructuralism Meets DisCrit: Tensions, Affinities, and New Imaginaries

Abstract

Historically, Poststructuralism and Critical Theory have been seen either in opposition or belonging to different theoretical traditions (Harcourt, et al., 2022). However, a number of scholars and activists have seen the benefits of drawing from a variety of analytical positions, to make sense of current identity and social crises, including the Decolonizing Education, Black Lives Matter, and Disability Justice movements (Author 2 et al., 2022; Phuong & Cioè-Peña, 2022). This paper germinates from conversations on the cross-pollination between Foucault’s Poststructural tools and Disability Critical Race Theory in education (DisCrit). We highlight tensions and affinities between these two approaches, with the aim to expand the analytical toolbox, and open new imaginaries to make sense of the intersections of ableism and racism.
