Abstract

Scholars committed to pursuing decolonial, post-colonial, and anti-colonial perspectives must recognize the destabilizing nature of globalization but also consider the enduring influence of neo-liberal policies that perpetuate systematic injustice. One way of addressing this conundrum is to conceive of educational research as one of many cultural products, subject to global circulation and distribution, within hegemonic neo-liberal structures. In this paper, I attempt to do so by analyzing the ways in which racism and its relationship to education is depicted in three internationally acclaimed films and television series, produced in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., noting the ambivalence expressed regarding educational efficacy in attacking systematic racism.
