In this study, three critical teacher educators from geographically diverse institutions leveraged lesson study to prioritize the unique instructional needs of Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in general education classrooms. Building upon their unique expertise in sciences, social studies, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), the research trio crafted a lesson centering on an environmentally-focused documentary film, foregrounding teaching and learning from a culturally sustaining lens (Ladson-Billings, 2014; Paris & Alim, 2014). The lesson was iteratively taught across three unique contexts, with an increasingly refined focus on environment, global identities, and power, with a focus on supporting teacher candidates in planning to work with EBs. Findings include opportunities to continue to de-center whitestream ways of knowing throughout the process.
