Abstract

Asset-based pedagogies (ABPs) are strength-based views of students. However, the proliferation of constructs and changes in cultural contexts have led to both re-interpretations and mis-interpretations of the theories. Culturally relevant pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995), culturally responsive teaching (Gay, 2018) and culturally sustaining pedagogies (Paris & Alim, 2014) are three major ABPs in education. Our purpose is 1) identify original and revised principles of ABPs; 2) understand the changes within historical contexts; 3) make recommendations for future use. Findings indicate ABPs must continually respond to dynamic shifts in culture, as well as the current educational needs of students in order to remain relevant and accomplish the original purpose of ABPs - the academic achievement and social successes of historically marginalized communities.
