Limited research has explored social studies teachers’ perceptions of sustainability and environmental and sustainability education in Asian contexts. This study addresses an urgent need for inquiring Taiwanese social studies teachers’ perceptions of sustainability. I conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty-five 7th -9th grade social studies teachers to uncover how they define sustainability. Results showcase that teachers’ mindset on sustainability is culturally contextualized. Three themes (cycling, cultural sustainability, and balancing and harmony) all integrate specific cultural elements such as the traditional Chinese philosophy and virtues that lead our lives or Indigenous values. Based on the findings, I suggest that teacher education institutions should provide appropriate ESE support for preservice and inservice teachers along with their professional expertise and backgrounds.
