How Racism and Whiteness Block and Drain Criticality From Multicultural Education and Ethnic Studies Policies and Praxis

Abstract

Students of Color come from communities that prioritize care for family and community and, therefore, approach learning as a collaborative and cooperative endeavor; they must also contend with racism and other forms of state-sponsored terrorism in schools and society, necessitating a communitarian orientation to survive and thrive. Through qualitative interviews of state department of education officials, local school district administrators, PK-12 teachers and students (mostly Teachers and Students of Color), and community-embedded education activists, and using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical framework this proposed presentation examined efforts to integrate Ethnic Studies in PK-12 and teacher education and professional development in Nevada.
