Looking for Belonging as a Matter of Care in the Documentary Inclusief (Inclusive)

Abstract

In this paper we focus on the importance of striving for belonging for children following inclusive education. We follow Biklen (2020) that effective inclusion always seems to return to the question of belonging. We look into a Flemish (Belgium) documentary Inclusief [Inclusive] to see how belonging shows itself for four children with a disability following inclusive education. We highlight two scenes and illustrate by pictures how we see belonging for these students with disabilities. We state belonging is connected to finding roots (Weil, 2001) and the most important way to help children with disabilities to attain this is by listening and responding with care. This means the children are turned to and seen as children full of competence and talent.
