Abstract

Due to COVID-19 pandemic and sudden school closures, remote learning was implemented. Not all teachers and related service providers were prepared to teach/offer services online. Skills of many students with disabilities had regressed during this period. When in-person learning was resumed in Fall 2021, schools must determine what compensatory services to be provided and to whom. However, families were not often involved in the process. The purpose of this study was to share how one community-based parent group empowered immigrant families to seek compensatory services, so their children with disabilities could receive the special education services they were entitled to but missed during that period. Recommendations on what schools can do to eliminate the barriers parents faced are provided.
