The Beauty of Black Literacies: (Re)Membering Heritage Knowledge Through Liberated Hip-Hop Curriculum

Abstract

Leaning on Joyce E. Kings concept of Liberating Knowledge (2006) and Cynthia B. Dillard’s notion of cultural (re)membering (2012), this paper features the theoretical and practical applications of an authentically created literacy curriculum developed to illuminate liberated (re)memberings of Black history, to re-construct the ways Black youth see their heritages and themselves through a Hip Hop aesthetic. The curricular modules, entitled Liberating Learning Modules (LLM) provide a systemic framework for instruction that centers the literacies Black youth rely upon, relate to and privilege in their everyday lives to showcase the beauty of Black language and its historical lineage.
