This study investigated the effectiveness of a personalized role-playing game in promoting students’ learning efficiency and mental efficiency. Results showed students achieved higher performance while spent less mental effort and learning time after being trained in the personalized RPG. Additionally, a moderate negative relationship was found between performance and mental effort while a strong negative relationship was found between performance and learning time. Findings indicated that personalized RPG is effective in developing efficient learners. Personalized RPGs could be used for supporting complex tasks training that demands high cognitive investment. Learning time could be a good indicator of efficient learners when performance is expected at certain level.
