Abstract

This paper will address the following research questions through a systematic qualitative review: (a) What does it mean to have family collaboration rooted in CSP in the IEP process? What does it look like? (b) How can we move towards more culturally sustaining practices in the IEP process? I draw from Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (Paris, 2014) as my guiding theoretical framework to analyze how special education can foster cultural identities, academic investments, and critiques of White middle-class values, keeping in mind parents as agents in the decision making of their children. Findings will be synthesized and organized based on emerging themes in order to offer a comprehensive description of the urgency to promote culturally sustaining practices in special education.
