This ethnographic study examined leadership practices at an immigrant-serving school in an urban immigrant enclave in New York City. Bethel High serves only the highest-need immigrant students but consistently reports positive outcomes on almost every traditional measure of achievement. I wanted to know how leaders at this high school created greater learning opportunities for newly arrived immigrant students? I found that political responsiveness was crucial for keeping bureaucracy and established systems in proper perspective and shielding teachers and students from unjust systems. A politically centered approach to leadership helped school leaders reimagine students' time frames for learning, growth, and development and create more appropriate structures for their teachers and students.
