"Taming" a Wild Tongue: Bilingual Maestras' Language Ideologies in Nepantla

Abstract

In this study of bilingual education maestras from the Texas-Mexico borderlands, I utilize life storying to understand how the maestras negotiate their language ideologies (Razfar, 2012). Knowing that bilingual education teachers have a multiplicity of language ideologies that influence their pedagogy, I use nepantla (Anzaldúa, 1987) and raciolinguisticis (Flores & Rosa, 2015) to demonstrate how language ideologies reflect historical layers of colonialism and imperialism, while at the same time resistance towards hegemonic practices.
