Reconceptualization of Digital Competence for Educators

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Educators decisions about using digital technologies in the learning process enable or challenge equity and inclusion of the learners. These decisions are too often made based on limited research or conceptualization of existing practices. We propose based on a thematic literature review a re-conceptualized framework of digital competence for educators to increase equity and inclusion in learning context. In this framework we distinguish between basic, contextual and transformative competence. The innovativeness of the framework lays in the dimension of transformative competence that consists in creative adaptation of digital technologies in professional contexts and ethical and responsible use of digital technologies. We show how critical ethical and responsible use of technology should lead to better equity and inclusion in education.
