Abstract

Music is known to be a key element in early education classrooms as well as early development (Patel 2008; Sena Moore 2018). How does music shape three- to eight-year-old children’s cognitive and academic development? The current review of 27 articles examined and analyzed the characteristics of music interventions, outcomes measures’ associations with music, and the quality of the studies. Findings demonstrate that music seems to be beneficial for young children in social emotional development and motor skills; however, there are inconclusive findings on music skills transferring to academic skills. There is a need for more interdisciplinary and longitudinal studies to better understand music’s influence on early development and music as an integrative tool in early development, across cultures and communities.
