Practices That Support Mathematics Education Researchers' Work in Interdisciplinary Collaborations

Abstract

Mathematics education researchers’ (MERs) interdisciplinary collaborations contribute to the development of mathematics education as a discipline. MERs' learned forms of being, interacting, and operating, i.e., practices, are particular to their mathematics education discipline and might not be applicable in interdisciplinary collaborations. To create descriptions of MERs’ practices while collaborating in interdisciplinary work, we interviewed four MERs who lead interdisciplinary groups. We used qualitative content analysis to describe five practices used by the MERs. Findings illustrate how MERs experience interdisciplinary collaborations beyond contributing mathematics education expertise.
