However, characterizing the field is a challenge because studies that draw on diverse theoretical traditions and use varied concept labels, including equity, culturally responsive, social justice, prompting questions about how to make sense of these studies in relation to one another. We conducted a qualitative literature review to describe and differentiate the distinct subfields within racial justice-focused school leadership literature and outline the connections that link these bodies of literature to one another. We found that conceptual distinctions influence how studies depict justice-focused educational leadership but noted considerable overlap between subfields.
