Fri, May 5, 2:30 to 4:00pm CDT (2:30 to 4:00pm CDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, Early Education and Child Development SIG Virtual Paper Room

Abstract

In this content analysis of children’s picture books, the authors identified 33 recent, widely available titles that focus on mistakes, then characterized their key messages and attributes. Analysis revealed that the books had overwhelmingly positive takeaways, emphasizing themes like universality, perseverance, and responsibility. Mistakes tended to occur accidentally, have a broad impact, and mirror real-world situations. Often, they initially prompted negative responses but, ultimately, mistakes tended to be helpful and well-received. Overall, the books provide positive representations of mistake responses, including innovation, risk-taking, optimistic self-talk, and receiving support from others. Shared reading can facilitate opportunities for teachers, parents, and other trusted adults to discuss and model mistake-related attitudes and behaviors, thereby guiding young children’s future responses.
