Reimagining Literacy Teacher Education for Social Justice

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Teacher educators have worked to integrate social justice into teacher candidate (TC) preparation with the goal of preparing TCs who can teach culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse children. Research indicates that these concepts are not typically infused by teacher educators throughout entire programs which can limit or undermine the confidence of TCs to teach in socially just ways.

Using case study methodology, this study addressed a gap in the literature by investigating how a revised curriculum built upon and increased the understanding and confidence of teacher candidates to teach literacy in a socially just way. As a result, TCs grew in their literacy knowledge, pedagogies, and confidence to employ SJ concepts.
