Predictors of L2 Grit and Language Learners' Flow Experience in Online Versus Onsite Settings

Abstract

Language-domain-specific grit is believed to be one of the most important positive personality factors affecting second/foreign language learning. This preregistered questionnaire study investigates four predictors of L2 grit—L2 mindsets, curiosity, resilience, and autonomy—in online vs in-class learning settings, and the extent to which these constructs affect flow experience. Based on responses of 808 learners from more than 60 countries, multiple linear regression models built separately for the two contexts confirm the existence of distinct predictors of L2 grit in remote vs in-class settings and partially different predictors of L2 learning engagement. These results point to the context-dependent nature of L2 grit, making an important contribution to the existing knowledge on the role of this construct in language learning.
