Literacy-Based Cybersecurity Curriculum Unit for High School Students: A Design-Based Research

Abstract

This study aims to develop a literacy-based cybersecurity curriculum unit for Taiwanese high school learners. Using a design-based research method, the teaching materials (ransomware and phishing attacks) were carried out with ADDIE model and incorporated the steps of Big Six skills in learning activities. This study also used action research in the implementation stage to improve teaching and adopted the Kirkpatrick model in the evaluation stage. Two classes of local vocational high school students participated in the study and one of the researchers conducted two cycles of online teaching. Results of evaluation indicated that students’ knowledge of cybersecurity has improved; they have performed well in the construction of concept maps, and had given positive feedback on their attitudes toward cybersecurity.
