We asked how vocational high school students’ intent to leave applied engineering programs and college aspiration/expectation are related to their self-efficacy, intrinsic value, and emotional cost in math, technical, and shop courses during the first year of study. Survey responses in fall 2021 and spring 2022 from 171 students in 12 applied engineering programs in Taiwan demonstrated the self-efficacy of math and shop courses informed college aspiration, whereas self-efficacy of technical courses informed the intent to leave the program or school. However, the emotional cost of technical and shop courses formed opposite relationship with students’ educational plan. Findings call for more research on the dimensional comparison of different types of courses and expectancy-value beliefs in vocational education.
