This paper begins to unravel the apparent contradiction between Lyle Spencer’s commercially-oriented career and his unwavering support for consequential education research by interrogating his journey through higher education. Historical examination of Spencer’s experiences as a student at the University of Washington and the University of Chicago in the 1930s not only helps to uncover the views that propelled Spencer to establish the foundation that bears his name, but also demonstrates how student organizations exerted a formative influence on their members and reveals new dimensions of the politics of knowledge.
