This qualitative research project analyzed students’ thinking as they engaged in a STEM-based learning activity set in an escape room that utilized a theme related to the movie The Matrix. The room was set in a Nordic university and required posing and solving a variety of mathematical problems to escape. Drawing on embodied cognition (Alibali & Nathan, 2018; Shapiro & Stolz, 2019) and an analytic framework developed by the Authors (2021, 2022), we provide evidence of the nature of student thinking in an authentic context, with a particular focus on the nature of the claims and reasoning offered by the students. Our results provide insight into student thinking at the intersection of formal and informal learning contexts.
