Applying the Activity System Model to Discussion-Based Archival Data: An Examination of Possibilities and Accommodations

Abstract

Archival data were collected during a culture-specific intervention that used adult-facilitated, peer-based discussion groups focused on facilitating development of critical thinking, problem solving skills, and healthy relationships among 22 early adolescent Black/African American girls. Exploratory studies added to our understanding of their perspectives and lived experiences. In this study, we examine the possibility of extending these findings by applying the activity system model to these discussion-based archival data. We identify ways of applying the principals and components of the activity system model to discussion-based data and areas in need of accommodation. Finally, we suggest applying these to a larger corpus of data to further evaluate ways to accommodate them within a discussion-based activity system with adolescent participants.
