Centering Faculty in Student-Faculty Interaction: Differential Effects by Faculty and Institutional Characteristics

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago, Floor: 2nd Floor, Aegean

Abstract

Faculty interactions with students are key to college student learning, development, and academic achievement. Using the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, this study investigates the following research questions: (1) How does the level of faculty interaction with students differ by faculty gender and race? (2) What college environments and faculty experiences facilitate a higher level of interaction with students? (3) How do such college environments and faculty experiences vary by faculty gender and race?

Using t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regressions, the authors found significant differences (e.g., women and faculty of color report more frequent student-faculty interactions). Complete findings and implications for creating more equitable workplaces for faculty and more opportunities for students to benefit from interaction with faculty are discussed.
