How Does Ego Depletion Influence Logical Reasoning and Monitoring Accuracy? (Poster 35)

Abstract

Irrespective of much research about the effect of ego depletion on self-control in social psychology, there is little evidence regarding ego depletion influences on learning and performance by factoring in cognition, metacognition and motivation. To address this gap, the present study mainly examined students’ logical reasoning, learning monitoring accuracy, experienced mental effort and intrinsic motivation in depletion and non-depletion conditions. In a computer-based environment, Chinese college students(N=57) were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions. The results, revealing an effective depletion manipulation, showed deleterious effects of ego depletion on logical reasoning and monitoring accuracy and, incongruent with previous studies, depleted students reported significantly more mental effort. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed and more research is needed.
