Ethical Challenges in Inclusive Education: The Case of Finnish Teachers

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This paper explores ethical challenges for Finnish teachers in inclusive education. The value base for teachers’ ethics in Finland is derived from ethical codes for teachers and the Comenius Oath. The Finnish educational system is built on inclusion, equality, and equity. These concepts are discussed from national and international perspectives with a view to the implications for teachers’ work. Ethical sensitivity in teaching is identified as an important skill that facilitates teachers’ ability to treat each student equally and promote social justice in their work. Nonetheless, teachers require more education both on issues related to inclusion, equality, and equity and on their role in promoting these aspects of education throughout the world.
