The Intersection of Equity Pedagogy and Technology Integration in Preservice Teacher Education: A Scoping Review

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Northwestern/Ohio State

Abstract

Teacher education programs play a crucial role in developing teachers’ equity/social justice and technological knowledge, mindsets, and practices. Scholars have advocated for merging these two areas to access learning benefits identified by initial research. However, little is known about how equity pedagogy and technology integration intersect in preservice teacher education. This scoping review aims to expand knowledge and understanding in this area. Findings revealed that most relevant studies involved leveraging technology to teach about equity/social justice (i.e., tech-integrated equity pedagogy), while only a subset involved addressing technology’s role in matters of equity/social justice (i.e., digital equity pedagogy). We provide several systems of classification for these studies, highlight implications for teacher educators, and make recommendations for further research.
